Scammers Are Now Sending Malware Through Calendar Invites

Have you ever received a strange calendar invite on your email — for a meeting you never scheduled? It might look like a reminder or an event invite, but these are part of a new trick used by cybercriminals.

They are now sending malicious calendar invites that carry harmful links or files. All you have to do is click “Accept” — and your device may be compromised.

How It Works

  • Scammers send calendar invites with links to malware
  • You click it thinking it’s a meeting, reminder, or shared file
  • The link may install spyware or steal your credentials
  • Sometimes, just opening the calendar event triggers malicious actions

This scam is mostly targeting Gmail, Outlook, and mobile calendar apps.

Why It’s Dangerous

  • No need to download an app — clicking one invite can do damage
  • Attackers can bypass spam filters since calendar invites often look legitimate
  • You might share your calendar with others — putting teams and families at risk

How to Protect Yourself

  • Turn off automatic calendar invites from unknown senders
  • Never click links in events you didn’t schedule
  • Use an up-to-date antivirus on mobile and desktop
  • Check calendar permissions — don’t let apps auto-sync unknown invites
  • Report suspicious calendar entries to your IT team or email provider

What You Should Do Now

  1. Go to your calendar settings and disable auto-adding invitations
  2. If you receive a strange event invite, don’t click it — delete it immediately
  3. Watch out for event titles that say things like “Salary Revision,” “Invoice Due,” or “Download Your Payslip”
